Since the club began in 1902, Real Madrid has traditionally worn white in their home kit. The club was originally founded by students of Institución Libre de Enseñanza, naming itself the “Madrid Football Club”. The team played in all white button up collared shirts with the club logo proudly displayed on the left chest. The team’s shorts were also white while socks were black.
This ensemble of all white combined with black socks remained for many years. It wasn’t until 1925 where Real Madrid experimented with changing their home kit. Hoping to mirror the uniform from the then famous Corinthian Football Club in London, UK, the club adopted black shorts into their kit. This change was short lived however. In the same year of adoption, Real Madrid was eliminated by FC Barcelona in the Spanish Cup tournament which prompted the Club President to revert back to white shorts, citing “bad luck”.
The following year, Real Madrid wore all white with black socks once again. Luck was proven restored, with Real Madrid winning their first league title in 1932. The club won again in the following year, sparking history as the first team to win back-to-back titles.
The final evolution of the Real Madrid uniform came in 1955. In that year, the club changed sock colours from black to white, and have remained so ever since. This change proved to provide additional luck, with the club winning their first European Cup title in 1956. Real Madrid went on to win the European Cup four more times in the next four years – amounting to five titles in a row.
